[comp.sys.atari.st] Removeable hard disk drive for Atari ST

pns@cbnews.ATT.COM (Prabhat N. Sahay) (02/28/89)

Recently, I heard that someone is coming out with a removable
hard disk drive for Atari ST. These drives are supposed to have
the same access time as the fixed hard disk drives and they are
very cheap (around $300 for the drive and $10 for the disk).

Is this a fact or just plain rumor. Please send me e-mail if you
know more about this. I will post a summary of all responses.

	Thanks in advance,

	Prabhat Sahay

in Byte a few months ago (the NeXT review issue), there was a blurb about
a (supposedly 100%) ST225-compatible 20 MB removable floppy drive which
is supposed to be priced to directly compete with the Seagate hard drive.
the article sez the disks would (be made by Kodak?) cost about $8 each.
if it is in fact plug-compatible with the hard drive, you could theoretically
just open up your SH204 and drop this puppy in. how you get the disks in
and out after you close the cover is another matter *8^). finding the disks
could also provide hours of fun...

(some SH204's use ST225's, right?)

I've seen that rumor as well. The company that is currently advertising
in START magazine, WestCo has announced a price of $1,300 for their
removable system with drive, and interface, but rumor has it that
the ICD host adaptor will do the job of the interface at much less
cost. Also, this is noweher near the $300 price mentioned and another
rumor is that the entire Westco project is now on hold. I would assume
that since our cousins in the Mac world can get 45 meg removables at
around $1,000 that the $1,300 asked by Westco is a bit much for their
20 meg removables. Of course this may all have nothing to do with the
$300 removable - confused? I am, thats why I just swapped my 30meg mech
for a 50meg mech instead! :-]
