After seeing the game on a freind's ST, I went out and purchased a copy of "ELITE(tm)". I am having trouble using the joystick with it and want to know if this is a common problem: When manuvering with the joystick, spurrious key events are being detected which are interpreted by ELITE as commands to launch, fire torpedes, jump into hyperspace, and several other things. This has happened with three different brands of joysticks. This appears to me to be a problem with data overrun from the ikbd. It's my guess that the joystick packets are coming in faster than ELITE can respond to them and some characters from the packets are being lost. When the packet interpreter loses characters inside a packet, the first few characters from the next packet are used to complete the packet and the remaining characters from that packet are interpreted as key events. The problem is such that I cannot play the game comfortably. I've only been able to dock successfully once, and that was using the keyboard. What I would like to know is if anybody else has this problem. Also, is this due to the fact that I have a very early machine with an early IKBD? Is there a fix that does not cost $$$? I'm at work now, but I believe that this is a Rainbird product. Do they have a fix that reduces the joystick sampling rate to something that the program can keep up with? -- _____________________________________________________________________________ Daniel A.
