[comp.sys.atari.st] Running IBM Software on an Atari ST with PC-Ditto

arya@eros.Berkeley.EDU (Manish Arya) (03/12/89)

I received a brochure from Gadgets by Small that mentions a product
called PC-Ditto from Avante-Garde (I'm not positive of the name, I
don't have the brochure with me right now) that allows an ST to run
IBM Software. Supposedly this product can coexist with the Spectre
128, and with the aid of a piece of public domain software, allow
selection of Mac, IBM, or Atari mode at boot-time.

Can anyone attest to the quality of the IBM emulation PC-Ditto
provides? I'd also like to know the company's phone number and a
rough estimate of its price, and how it "plugs" into an ST.

Hi Manish, unlike Spectre 128, pc-ditto is not *yet* a hardware emulator.
pc-ditto is strictly software emulator that does a great job emulating
an XT albeit at about 50-80% IBM speed depending on the program being
run. It costs $89 retail, about $65 mail order. Avant Garde's phone
number is (904)-221-2904 9-5 EST.

There is more though! Scheduled for release at the World of Atari show
in April is pc-ditto II, a HARDWARE and software emulator that will
be more compatible and run at 100% XT speed! Avante Garde is offering
current owners of pc-ditto and any new buyers a coupon for 50% off the
hardware emulator when it is released! Now thats company support!

I own PC-Ditto, which works as adverised. It will run any
software that a run-of-the-mill IBM clone can. I have run several titles
for the IBM and have run into no problems. However, as you might know,
PC-Ditto's only fault is speed. It's no peed deamon, and you may be
shocked to see it kludge along after using a 12mz IBM machine.
I got it as a gift, and I don;t use it much. Unless you already
have lots of IBM software and no IBM machine to run it on would I
reccomend you getting PC Ditto. It works, but it's no subsitute for a
actual IBM.
I have found lots of software, PD or otherwise, that suits my
needs for the Atari, so there is not a lot of IBM software that I find
essential to have.
However, as you can get it for a mere $65 if you shop right, it
is an interesting hack and is fun to show to your friends (See what my
St can do?).
