For the keyboard fanatics in the group, I've found some info. on recent Yamaha developments and prices (the most important part). Yamaha CP-80 list. $5600? (the salesman was noticeably high) Yamaha CP-70 list. $3600 (sounded like I could get one for ~$2500) The Yamaha PF-15 (?) new digital synthesizer with velocity sensitive keyboard lists at $1595 and they (Guitar City, Chicago) sold six last week. They're out of them presently. These keyboards don't have the same tonal quality as the electric grands, but supposedly are a knockout. A list of $1595 is extremely reasonable for this type keyboard. The "Yamaha PF-15 (?)" is probably the Yamaha DX-7, which is a programmable digital (FM synthesis) synthesizer which lists for ~$2000. It has a velocity- and pressure-sensitive keyboard. There is also a DX-9, which is slightly less versatile and doesn't have velocity or pressure sensitivity. I think it lists for ~$1300. The DX-7 and DX-9 are considered major price breakthroughs in digital synthesis. I don't know much about their sound, but if you are interested, there was a demo record stapled into an issue of Keyboard magazine last summer (I'm not sure which month). A friend of mine is planning to buy one soon, so if enough people show interest, I'll post a review. Have fun. Stephen Folta folta@Yale-Comix (I think)

I've had the opportunity to play around with the dx-7, and boy am I impressed. The sounds you can make with that bugger are almost limitless. Everything is programmable. I mean everything. You can alter the effect and stepping of the pitch bend wheel. You can change envelopes wveforms, oscillator set up, you name it. It has plug in ROM cartridges, each of which contain 64 voises, all of which are downloaded in RAM, thus can be modified by the user. There are also cartridges with non-volatile RAM for saving user defined voices. The sound is pretty nice. As I said the variety in sound is amazing. You can get some pretty professional sounding results from this thing. Its a great toy. I only wish it was in my department.... The PF-15 is NOT the DX-7. The PF-15 is one of Yamaha's digital pianos. It is NOT programmable. It operates exclusively from presets. It may indeed use the same sound generating circuitry without the programming harware/software. Dave -- Dave Burris ..!ihnp4!ihopa!burris AT&T Bell Labs, Naperville, Il.
