[comp.sys.atari.st] A recommended audio digitizer!

Friesen@PCO-MULTICS.HBI.HONEYWELL.COM (03/26/89)

Hi all, I just thought that I would tell you about a software package I
got. It's called Replay 4, it's a *VERY* improved upgrade from ST
Replay. It retails for $99. It is an audio digitizer that uses a
cartridge to allow input and output (you can hook it up to an amp or
stereo (it isn't stereo though)). It turns sounds you put in with a
mic, tape player etc. into digitized sounds and then the sounds can be
modified. You can speed up or slow down the sounds, (you can record and
playback sounds at 5, 7.5, 10, 15, 20, or 30 Khz and if you are
outputting to a HiFi system you can play at 40 and 50 Khz) you can play
them backwards (with this feature, I disproved that the Mr. Ed theme
song is satanic!), and with cut, paste, and overlay, you can create
interesting echo effects. Replay 4 also has a real time oscilloscope
and a real time spectrum analyzer. Replay 4 is fully mouse driven and
allows support for MIDI (this is the part I really like). You can hook
your MIDI instrument up and control the playback of sounds. You can
define ten different sounds to ten different keys on your MIDI board.
For example, if you digitized sounds of 10 precussion instruments, you
could define each instrument to a certain key on your keyboard and use
it as a "drum machine". It has another mode wich lets you take any of
these 10 sounds, and play them through your keyboard, but depending on
what keys you play, make them played faster (to give a higher sound) or
slower (to give a lower sound). This gives you a many featured sampling
keyboard with great sounding samples and long samples. There is one
problem with this, and that is that you can not play more than one sound
at a time (i.e. hit two keys at once). Replay 4 also comes with a new
effects program (improved over the one that came with ST Replay). The
effects program allows for echo and similar effects done in real time
(you cannot use it to modify Replay 4 files :-( ). The effects program
is very adjustable and can allow for some interesting effects. Replay 4
also comes with Digi Drum wich allows you to compose music by defining
when certain digitized sounds (of limited length) are to be played such
as drums, cymbols, or even a dog barking or glass breaking. I should
warn you that Digi Drum is not easy to use and does not support GEM.

I would recommend this digitizer which by the way is from Mitchron.
