[comp.sys.atari.st] Atari computers: not just a game machine

SWW0751@TAMVENUS.BITNET (04/02/89)

Howdy Atarians,

I need you help. I am preparing a persuasive speech for my Technical Speaking
class. The title is "Atari Computers: Not Just a Game Machine." It will be an
8 to 10 minute speech. Of course, the main idea of the speech is to persuade
the audience/class that Atari makes great computers. I am a proud owner of
MEGA 4 ST and have been a loyal fan of Atari ever since the 2600 VCS. In fact,
I have 90+ 2600 cartridges and I am still buying/collecting them whenever I can.

I do have access to financial statements and basic corporate infomation. What
I need is statistics, examples and testimonies. I am interested in a summary
of Atari's history.

Also, I have the following questions.

1. How does Atari computers with other computer companies in the U.S.?
    In Europe?
2. Does Atari sell any other computers besides the 2600/5200/7800,
    400/800/1200 and the STs?
3. When did Atari change from making game machines to producing real computers?
4. How many businesses, universities and schools use Atari computers?
5. When did Atari Games seperate for Atari Corp.?
6. What kind of reputation does Atari have in Europe?
7. ... (For any other questions I haven't of you yet, please answer them. :-)

As I understand it, the development of Atari's reputation, in the U.S., as a
game machine company was Atari's fault. Is there general agreement on this
statement? If not, please explain.

This and any other information will be appreciated. Please send private e-mail
responses to me if possible.

Thanks in advance,

Gee, asking about when Atari started making computers, and the
history is a tall order indeed. The best place to get more
information, is through back copies of either Antic or Analog, and
perhaps, if you have some time before your speech, you might want
to contact Atari Customer Services, and they might be able to help
you on some points, if you tell them what you are doing. It also
seems like something you could do a term paper on.
