I'm finally in in the market for a hard disk for my Mega ST-2. A 40Mb, 28ms unit is desired. I don't have lots of free time to roll my own like many of the folks that post to this newsgroup, so I am looking for recommendations for a good, reliable unit that will plug in and run with minimal hassle! Supra, ICD, Atari, etc... what are the differences in quality and performance? Is there a unit that will fit IN my Mega, and, if so, is that a good idea? Once I get a disk, what software utilities are recommended for back-up and maintenence? Any and all comments will be appreciated! Thanks in advance! %%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%% % Andy Cassino % % uucp: hplabs!hplsla!andyc domain: andyc%hplsla@hplabs.hp.com % % Hewlett-Packard Lake Stevens Instrument Division % % 8600 Soper Hill Road Everett, WA 98205-1298 % % (206) 335-2211 % %%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%

Hi Andy, first off, if plan any future expansion then get a case that can handle two drives - the ICD FaST case is very nice and will fit two 3.5 HD mechs. A 40Mb, 28 ms drive from an established company will be hard to find but I believe that ICD offers 50meg with room for another drive. I just finished putting together a 100meg drive in an ICD case. I used two Seagate 157N's (48megs and 28 ms each) and they fly at 550Kps and 35-40ms based on ICD's HD Rate program. Putting it all together required a screwdriver and about half an hour with ICD's case because *everthing* you need is included except the mech itself. SUpra makes a 40 meg that fits under the hood of the Mega but I wouldn't go that route because it adds heat to the computer and the vibrations can be bad for the motherboard. Also, if the HD goes down the computer goes with it and vice versa. Peter Szymonik
