I heard this rumor(?) while in a local shop yesterday. Atari is dropping the 520 and 1040 STs and adding a Mega1 ST. The Mega1 will be just like the Mega2/4 with less memory, but will have the sockets in place on the board for easy upgrades. Anyone else heard this? keith keithr@icogem3.ico.TEK.COM

Keith writes that he heard that Atari is dropping the 1040/520, and releasing a Mega1. This is interesting. I don't know whether or not it is true, but the idea is interesting. One complaint of people whom I have talked to about the ST, is that in order for them to think of the ST as a REAL computer, it needs a detached keyboard. This does seem to be the trend, and the layout of the Megas is very good. I think that this is a good idea, because many people refuse to buy a computer unless it looks like computers they are used to. Many people see the attached keyboard and think of the VIC-20. I also don't really like the side drive on the 1040s. This may be a good marketing strategy and also it would probably save money, because they could stop making the 1040 cases completely.
