[comp.sys.atari.st] Atari's mouse. Still best for my hand.

I use Microsoft's mouse at work as well as the new ergonomic
Logitech mouse. I still prefer the Atari mouse. I have long
fingers and the Atari mouse allows me to drape my hand over
the buttons. With the two mice on DOS machines, both are so
low that I end up crimping my fingers on the buttons. I do
wish that the Atari mouse had a smoother button click, though. The
bouncy feel to the click is sometimes annoying.

Wow! I've never used a PC mouse, and now I don't think I ever want to. I
have used a lot of other mice, on workstations of various sorts, and for me
the Atari mouse is the *worst* I have ever used.

The *best* I've used was on an obscure workstation made by Whitechapel in
the UK. It's shaped almost like half a tennis ball, with three "buttons"
just exactly where your fingertips fall. It's extremely comfortable to use
for long periods of time, and the click gives just the right amount of
feedback without requiring a strong finger.

Next best is the Xerox optical mouse. The shape isn't so good, but it's
very light, moves very easily, and has really excellent click
characteristics - lighweight microswitches. And because it's optical,
there's no ball to get all gummed up.

But optical isn't always good. The Sun mouse is optical, but it's awful -
it's "directional" in the sense that you have to have the pad the right way
up and the mouse parallel to the sides of it for it to work at all. Weird.

It's just a pity that, with so many mice around, so few of them are
interchangeable. Then I'd be able to use the same kind of mouse on all the
machines I use. Sigh. One day, maybe...

	Martin.

Don't worry, I prefer those PC mice. The buttons are nice, and they are much
lighter and quiter than the Atari. The MS one is a bit small though, about
the size of the Atari minus 1/4 inch on each side.

That's funny. The Sun mice used here are by MSC, and they do not require the
mouse sides to be parallel to the pad. In fact, the mouse can be oriented
over 45 degrees off, and it will track properly. The pad has no "right
way up" but must be oriented at the proper relative angle.

Maybe sun changed mice, or rewrote some software (I doubt the latter, as the
mouse tracking seems good by design).
