Many thanks to all those who responded to posting. The symptom was that the ST had trouble reading the CONTROL.ACC during COLD boot. After warming up for about 15 min. it had no trouble booting up and reading CONTROL.acc. The majority of the responses, which I followed, was to return the ST and get a new one. I am now waiting. The suggestions for suspect parts include: the glue and mmu sockets, bad drive, bad disk. I don't think it was the disk, because I received a copy of the USA Language Disk which showed the same symptoms. Like another new owner, I also fail to understand why ATARI does not include the ST-Basic manual with the computer. Only the reference guide is provided, which is useless unless you have the manual.
