I would like any information about TEX or TEX-like software that runs on an IBM PC/XT or AT under MSDOS. Public domain is preferred, but will pay reasonable $ for it. Thanks, kevin@berkeley.edu

A firm called "Personal TeX" sells a version called "PC-TeX" in several peices, whose prices add up to the same, or perhaps a bit less. MicroTeX works very well, but the driver program, "dvi-eps" has a lot of bugs which have been reported but remain unfixed. I have not used PC-TeX but both products were reviewed in the September, 1985 issue of Dr. Dobbs Journal. The review is, unfortunately, both shallow and misleading; read it with caution. -- Ed Nather Astronomy Dept, U of Texas @ Austin {allegra,ihnp4}!{noao,ut-sally}!utastro!nather nather@astro.UTEXAS.EDU

One minor caveat about MicroTeX is that the documentation notes that it requires 512K of memory, and means it. On an AT w/ 512K I can't run it if I have any drivers or memory-resident utilities loaded. Since I normally load ANSI.SYS, that means that to run TeX I must move CONFIG.SYS and reboot; most annoying. Solution: if you want to use the PC for anything besides TeX, get MORE THAN 512K memory.
