I have this Avatex 1200 at home that seems suceptable to line noise problems. In my latest issue of STart I saw an add for the Supra 2400 and Flash 1.6 for $155. How good is the Supra? Is it fully Hayes compatable? Does it have a speaker? In the same ad I saw a simular deal for $175 w/ the Avatex 2400. Is it a better quality modem than the 1200? I posted an article about the problems with my Avatex 1200 and got lots of responses that the modem was ah... shall we say... 'not too good'. _ "Shadow, do something! All of the Hayes set is supported except for some stuff that would rarely be used (except, perhaps, in the UK.) The speaker tends to be a bit loud, but it is there. I owned an Avatex before it (1200, not HC), and the Supra is a good bit better. For some reason, though, the DTR line isn't used properly in mine. Anyone else have that problem? I have the Supra, and an older version of Flash. The Supra is, as far as most programs will care, completely Hayes compatible. I believe the only differences are in the S-registers. Yes, it has a speaker. I have had it for just about a year now, (bought it at the West Coast Computer Faire last year) and have had absolutely no problems with it. It seems to be fairly immune to noise, even at 2400 baud, but my phone lines are not particularly noisy, so your mileage may vary. I don't think you can do any better for the price. I just ordered a new Supramodem 2400 last month - in a word this modem is outstanding. Extremely well built and an excellent manual to boot. You can get it and FLASH for less than the $155 from MicroTyme I believe - they're number is 1-800-255-5835 and they are open MF 9-9, Sat 9-5. They sold me my modem for $129! I had a Supra 2400 baud modem, it worked for half a year, then one of the main chips fried -- it has negative voltage coming out several "wrong" pins. Anyhow I was upgrading to a Telebit TrialBlazer soon thereafter, so I never did try to get it repaired. Since the chip blew, I don't think you can blame the Supra design necessarily -- but who knows? -- - John M. Supra 2400 modem ? It's a great piece of hardware. I use it on the PC, Atari ST, Amiga and sometimes MAC. No compatibility problem whatsoever. I also dropped it quite a few times (unintentionally), broke the face plate and the on/off switch cover, but it's still working fine after over a year of daily use. Incidentally, I have an Avatek 2400 and I cannot log on Portal using any comm program on any computer because of the noise problem.

In Digest #203 Tim Mensch describes some features that, he says, the Supra 2400 modem does not have. Hmmmmm.... *My* Supra 2400, in a metal case, does indeed let you store a phone number in its' memory. It also redials the last number (or, more accurately, repeat the last command) when you enter A(slash) (my site won't take slashes properly so fill in with the appropriate ascii character) I don't know about the line isolation feature, I've never hooked a phone up piggy back. I suspect that Tim is right though...it probably doesn't have this one. Overall I've been pretty pleased with the Supra 2400. But, if I could bear to part with it for 3 weeks (or more) I'd send it in and have it checked over. When the phone rings the modem speaker comes on...regardless of how the autoanswer settings are. The modem doesn't pick up...the speaker just toggles on and you can hear the conversation coming over the modem. Also, the metal case gets a little too hot for my tastes. Note that I've never had any real problems with it...just these two minor annoying things. Oh...one more comment...I think they speaker they use is very cheap....not that you need great sound for the DTMF tones...but it still sounds like it has a rattle. -=->G<-=- -------------------------------------------------------------------- | Gordon R. Though there is some problem that some Supras had-- I can't remember what that was. My point wasn't that Supras are "bad" modems, only that a better one could be had for about $110. ----------- Tim Mensch Internet: tmensch@ucsd.edu
