[comp.sys.atari.st] How to get LARGE programs to Spectre?

jmg@cernvax.UUCP (jmg) (05/05/89)

My current means to get programs to Spectre is with the Xverter software,
which only deals with ~400K "Spectre/Mac" disks. Usually I stuff and/or
binhex them.

Now we have LARGE programs (Excel, Word 4.0) which, even stuffed, are
too big for Xverter. I cannot afford a special disk partition formatted
for xverter to write to. I thought of splitting the binhex files into
pieces, but cannot find a Mac program to put them back together, since
all the Mac programs seem to want to hold the file in memory and I only
have a 1040. Maybe someone has an idea (a Unix cat?).

A subsidiary query is for recommendations for a good memory expansion,
preferably to 4Meg., including address. The only one I have seen mentioned
is EZ RAM II: solderless (!), only 2.5Meg.

Hmmmmm, I use StuffIt 1.51 and process files via XVERTER all the
time. One of the files was over 1.5 meg in length (Mac-a-Mug) and
transferred over perfectly. I segmented the file via StuffIt on the
real Mac and then joined the segments together via StuffIt on the
Spectre 128 Ataritosh.
I do have a one meg MFS partition on my hard drive, though. After
transferring the segments from the ST side to the "Mac" side, it was
all fairly straight forward. I had no problem at all.
You've got to dedicate a partition for MFS if you want to do this
sort of thing on a regular basis.

I'm running Spectre on a Mega 2 with no hard drive. (Can't afford it yet)
All I do is Stuff the files on a Mac, transfer them over to my Atari, and
UnStuff them on the Spectre. No Xverter. I just use a telecomm program
under Spectre, and transfer the program directly to my HFS disk. As there
are pd telecomm programs out (older versions of RedRyder?) you shouldn't
have any problem doing this. My only problem is that Freehand II takes
up 98% or so of a HFS disk... I better get a HD really fast!

Actually Transverter will work with 800K disks, as long as the
disk is a MFS disk. Transverter does not support HFS. Macs normally
format single sided disks as MFS and double sided disks as HFS, hence
the doc talks about transfering 400K disks.

NOTE: The Spectre 128 software does not support formatting
double sided MFS disks. Several PD programs will format double sided
MFS disks, use one of them instead.

Another method of transfering large files is a null modem cable.
Just use a Mac term program on the Spectre and a Mac, and then use
xmodem (or whatever protocol you like) to transfer the file.

Transverter works also with 800K MFS disks. If I remember right, the Magic
Sac software usually included a formatter which would format disks to 800K and
MFS. I don't believe the Spectre software does, however.

Stuffit 1.51 allows for segmenting of files. With it, you can split a large
file into bite-size chunks of whatever size you desire.
