[comp.sys.atari.st] WordPerfect on the 520ST

TK0GRM1@NIU.BITNET (Gordon Meyer) (05/11/89)

I ran WordPerfect/ST on a 512K 520ST for about one year. I can
assure you that such a setup..(no hard drive by the way) will
work with documents at least 30 pages in length. (double spaced)
Did it all the time...with no problems. I suspect that if someone
was getting only ten pages on a 512K system then s/he had a lot
of desk acc.s eating up RAM.
Don't get me wrong...WP/ST *is* a memory hog. Using it on a 512K
system is not very fun. The spell checker will work at a crawl..
if it will run at all...and having multiple documents open at once
is next to impossible. It does work though..and it's not as
limited as past messages would have you believe. I managed many
term papers on a 512K machine. But I was sure to upgrade to a
1040 when it came time to do my thesis. :)

I made the original comment about WP only being able to do about
10 pages. I beleive your right about RAM being eaten up, but it's not
by desk accesories but by the harddisk driver. I don't use any desk
accessories when using WP, yet I am unable to use the spell checker because
of memory problems. Any day now I'll get my memory expanded but I just
wanted to let others know of my limitations.
