[comp.sys.atari.st] dealing with pirate boards

TK0GRM1@NIU.BITNET (Gordon Meyer) (05/11/89)

Let's break th line right here okay?
In a past digest Brian Walker makes a parenthetical question
about dealing with pirate bbs systems....
I know from past experience that Michtron is very interested in
hearing about pirate boards. If you have, or have access to,
a valid username/password just pass it on to them and they'll
take legal action if the board contains Michtron warez. They
haven't failed to shut down a pirate board yet.
If the board also has copies of the disk-loadable TOS1.4 then
Atari Corp might be interested in getting the same info. John
Townsend has commented (on GEnie) that Atari Corp is ready to
go after such violators.

Come on. Do you really think that someone who has access to a pirate board
is going tell a software company about it?

Yes Derek..not only do I think so, but I know so. The folks
at Michtron have shut down many a pirate board and will
continue to do so from all indications. Last year Gordon
Monnier (sp?) president of Michtron told me that they were
swamped with numbers/passwords to pirate boards when they first
announced a "bounty" on them. Remember, Michtron is going after
the sysop of the board...not the individual user that is "good"
enough to turn it in. It would appear that there is no honor
among thieves.

Funny. People keep tellling me this, but I've yet to see and evidence
of it. When I told Michtron about a pirate BBS, Gordon Monnier never
even returned the call and they never responded to my letters either.

Interestingly though, I have found that the FBI is actually starting
to prosecute Pirate BBS Sysops, if they can be shown that the actual
damages involved are significant. Usually this means "well connected"
BBS's with lot's of software.

Because of this, the little buggers are getting more than just "shut
down"; they're going to Federal Prison! Serves 'em right.
