I've been watching this discussion over the years, and I wonder if anybody has tried the following: Build a circuit that monitors the disc change status through the media change detect (or whatever it's called) and invert the write protect signal for a reasonable period after the change has been detected, otherwise it would pass the write protect signal unchanged. This circuit would be put between the disc drive and the Atari cable (and interface board) in the drive enclosure or inside the system unit and get its power from some convenient nearby source. I would think that the latching of the signal could be reset by the polling of the select line that the ST does at vertical refresh, and could be done with a few common 74LS??? chips. I am not a hardware engineer, but this seems to be a simple solution. I doubt it would cost very much to build. Anybody care to comment or try this idea out? Daniel A.
