[net.music] NYC public radio, Harmonic music and Paul Winter

jpl@mhtsa.UUCP (02/06/84)

This is a plug for public radio in the NYC area, specifically WNYC (93.9?FM).
This week is their quarterly fund raising drive ($35 for 12 monthly issues
of the programming guide).
I made my contribution last night during a live in-house broadcast by
David Hikes and the harmonic Choir. This is solely vocal chanting (both
olo and ensemble) making use of harmonic overtones produced by each voice.
David gave a brief explanation during the shown , but i still do not
understand how a single voice produces these overtones. Incidentally,
David and the Choir live and primarily work in NYC.
Anyway, by calling in and making my pledge during this show (sunday 7-9pm)
i received a free copy of "Solar Wind" by david & Choir.
Some other interesting programming in WNYC is 'Music from the Hearts of SPace'
(fri & sat 11-12pm) and 'News Sounds' (produced by John Shafer? - one of
the WNYC jocks) (sun - fri 12-1am & sat-sun 3-5pm). This music is what
i would describe as "space music". However, the most programming time is
devoted to classical music (Mozart, Bach, Beetovan(sp?) with some 19thC
romantic and very occasional 20thC).
If you like Paul Winter& Consort (kind of space jazz), you might be interested
to learn that during this week News Sounds will be broadcasting a recent
interview with him. Also, there is a chance that if you call and make a
pledge at that time, you can get a copy of his new album. WYNC was also
giving away tickets to GAry Burton w/ Chick Corea concert. anyyway
by calling at that right time you can get something besides a coffee cup
or paperweight, "but remember, the most important thing is that you call
and make that pledge (even if the phones are busy)."
