I'm having an erratic problem with a six-month old SupraDrive 60. Twice now it has failed to come up when I turn it on. The problem is clearly audible -- usually it spins for a few seconds, then gurgles a bit, presumably as the head moves into place. After the gurgling stops I can turn on my ST and it autoboots. When the problem strikes, the disk starts to spin but nothing happens -- no further sounds, and when I turn on the computer it boots from a floppy without my having to play with the keys, just as if the HD didn't exist. Any ideas? I will call Supra of course, but the problem is an erratic one and I would hate to do without for several weeks while they fail to find anything wrong! -- Bill Silvert, Habitat Ecology Division. The problem is Like the Vet told the farmer whose chickens were all laying on their backs and not laying eggs: "They're dead." so is your drive. If you ever get it going, BACK IT UP IMMEDIATELY. If this is a Seagate drive mech, there were problems on some of their drives with stiction (the tendency of two smooth surfaces to stick together), in combination with a lack of torque in the drive motor. A friend of mine had this happen to his drive in a PC. He would get it to start by picking up the case and spinning it slightly along the axis of the drive motor (which would break the stiction bond between the head and the platter). It doesn't take much of a twist to break the head loose (20-40 degrees). Do you park the heads on your drive when you shut it down? Dave

About three times a year, I have the same problem with my SH 204
from Atari. I'm not sure which connector it is, but after removing
the case of my hard drive and cleaning all the connectors, the
problem disappears.
Whether the problem is solved by my cleaning the connectors or by my
wiggling the wires going into the connectors as a result of the cleaning
I don't know. At any rate, the thing will work perfectly for about
four months.
I just consider it one of those things....
