[comp.sys.atari.st] ? for HP representatives

jlong@blackbird.afit.af.mil (Jeffrey K. Long) (07/17/89)

I have tried sending mail to HP.COM, but it always bounces, so since I
no several people on the net have the old DeskJets, thought this would be
a fair, "open question"!

Can one upgrade the older DeskJets to the DJ+??
Does it require more than a simple swap of the logic boards and the
mechanism? Would it cost too much to be worthwhile?

Thanks if anyone in an official postion to answer can help out!!

I wont detail what is involved in upgrading from a DeskJet to a DeskJet+
but I will tell you that the cost to purchase all required parts would
be about $320. This does not include labor and any warrantee
if you do the labor yourself. This "bootleg" sort of upgrade is not
supported or encouraged by HP, thats why I cannot and will not provide
part numbers and instructions. If HP did the upgrade it would easily
be another $100 for labor and the implied new warrantee. The changes
are electrical, mechanical, and different labels (both the product name
and the key pad). It is more than just an electronics board swap.

I have seen used DeskJets advertised for $500. I think that is a bit
high, but since DeskJets now retail for $795 selling a used printer at
50% of retail seems reasonable. This would be $400. Since you can get
a new DeskJet+ for under $700 street price you would be better off selling
your DeskJet used and buying a new DeskJet+.

Dave et al.,

I know this was posted before (or at least I think it was), but is
there a "quick fix" for this so-called parallel port problem? I'd
like to know, so that when I start recommending the DJ and DJ+, I can
offer the fix. I know it entails buffering the data lines or some
such, but I need specifics.

Dom

P.S. Could some kind soul also tell me what the exact problem is
again? I seem to always ask for information after the fact, but that
is the purpose of this NET, right? (To get info...)
