[comp.sys.atari.st] Rave review of Turbo-ST V1.6 and of Softrek in general

jlong@blackbird.afit.af.mil (Jeffrey K. Long) (07/14/89)

About two weeks ago I posted an article asking about the update policy for
Turbo_ST. I had read in one of the online mags that the update to version
1.6 was available to owners of V1.4 (I think that is what is said :-) )
for $5.00 and I was curious if I wouldn't be allowed the upgrade since I
still had my original V1.0 disk and hadn't bought any of the incremental
updates in the past.
         ***** I was wrong!! ******
I called Softrek, spoke to a very nice lady who told me to send my original
disk and a check for $5.00 to them. I mailed the update from Ohio on
the 6th of July, called to check on the status (spoke to same nice lady :-)
on the 12th of July and and was told the update had been made on the
10th!! Got home that afternoon and had **TWO** updates in my mailbox!!
It turns out a Mr. Dick Biow from Softrek had read my posting to the net and
on the 7th of July sent my a complimentary (I assume) update disk. The
other package was the updated V1.6 recopied to my original disk. I could
tell by the postmarks and the handwritting on the labels that they had been
sent at two different times. (I am told Mr. Biow works out of his home and
not the Softrek office). Anyway, Mr. Biow included a very polite and
pleasant letter addressing my misunderstandings about the update policy of
Softrek. He obiously cares a great deal about the reputation of his
company for quick and easily attained updates to their product!
It was a very nice surprise to get such prompt action from a software
company, and to deal with such pleasant people!!
How does V1.6 work? Well, I got it primarily for the advertised speedup
to WordPerfect, since I am writing my thesis using WP. I took a 14K long
LaTeX file (basically a plain ASCII type file with no imbedded formatting)
and paged from the top to the bottom using the "down" arrow.
With Turbo-ST it took 1 minute and 4 secs, and without it it took 1 min.
and 56 seconds! That is a VERY SIGNIFICANT IMPROVEMENT in the scrolling
speed of WP! I RECOMMEND this utility to anyone who uses their ST for
anything more than a game machine!!! The improvement in overall GEM
windows and the desktop (including NEODESK) is very noticeable!! :-)

To Close, SOFTREK is a very good, conscientious company and I am glad to
have bought their product.
   (*** NO, I don't work for them ***)

I totally agree concerning the praise of Turbo-ST. Not only are the
upgrades very liberal, but the program itself is one the most excellent
pieces of software for the ST that I have had the pleasure of using
since purchasing my 1040, especially version 1.6. It is extremly
quick in the way it handles GEM window redraws not to mention displays.
