[comp.sys.atari.st] Hard Drive and Mega upgrade questions...

WSCART01@ULKYVX.BITNET (07/29/89)

Can anyone either tell me or refer me to information about Hard drives
and controler and adapters. I've seen different adapters listed like ICD
and BMI, but what are the advantages and disadvantages? I recently purchased
a couple of 15 meg hard drives. (Surplus, which meens no docs, but i
couldn't pass them up for $30 bucks.)
I had no real idea of what i was getting into at the time. I've ordered
a ICD adapter on the advice of freinds, but i have reservations. These
drives came with SCSI interfaces for the IBM, again freinds told me it
wouldn't work with the ST, so i purchases an Omti. (They said it was the
fasted controler but wouldn't let me format the last track. Also the it
would support the Miniscribe IV ,mod 4020, in RLL format.) Now i hear
of the Abtech controler. What is it like?
Last question in this vain, These drives came with tape drives. How do i
access these? (Or should i bother?)

My other questions were, if i wanted to, how would i upgrade my Mega2 to
a Mega4? (I belive it needs 16-1meg chips, compasitors, and resisters; thing
is, what ohm resister, where do they go, what value compasitors?)

Finialy: I've noticed my Mega running at 304 RPM, I searched for a pot on
the drive to lower it to 302 RPM like my other drives, but i couldn't find
it. Is it hardwired?
