[comp.sys.atari.st] Where can I get:

harry@moncam.co.uk (Jangling Neck Nipper) (08/01/89)

Are the TOS 1.4 ROM's available in the UK now, and if so, where? How
much? Can they be put into a (fairly ancient) 520? I have been told
no, but is this because 1.4 is going out on bigger ROM's, or will the
new TOS simply not work with such an old machine?

Secondly, I have a Quantum 60 (100?) MB Hard Disk with embedded SCSI
that I want to use. I've heard that Adaptec make a controller to
go to SCSI; what's its number, and where (pref. UK) can I get it
(how much?). Also, the Supra HD software seems like a good thing
to get; again, where from and how much?

Thirdly, can I hang other devices off the SCSI? Someone said that you
could get more than one *hard* disk going because of the way the Supra
driver deals with them; would it handle other SCSI devices in the same
way, or would another driver be needed (assuming it's at all doable)?

Thanks in advance.

	You don't need a SCSI disk controller with an embedded
	SCSI drive.

	+--------+
	|     DMA|---->[DMA/SCSI]=====>[SCSI disk drives]
	|   ST   |
	|        |
        +--------+

			    and/or

	+--------+
	|     DMA|---->[DMA/SCSI]=====>[   SCSI   ]++>[ST506 drives]
	|   ST   |                     [controller]
	|        |
        +--------+

	Since your disk drive already speaks SCSI, you won't need
	an Adaptec (4010, 4070) or Xebec (S1410) controller. SCSI
	controllers are for old-style ST-506 drives like Seagate
	ST-225s.

	What you _will_ need is a DMA/SCSI adaptor. There are a
	couple: one made by Berkeley Microsystems and one made
	by Supra. Both come with a battery-powered clock to
	set the ST's time at power-up.

	You can add up to seven SCSI disk drives or SCSI controllers.
	Most SCSI controllers support 2 logical units, so you could
	connect up to 14 winchester disk drives to your ST.
