Just caught a news bit in InfoWorld concerning "new" Atari 68030 machines w/VME slots that will run Atari Unix Sys. V. Is this true? Cringely's article went on to say that they would be released on the 25th of August. Anybody know anything else? Curt Chambers

Interesting if true. I wonder how it will compete with the "you can touch it today." Commodore 68020 and 68030 Unix boxes that have Amiga 2000 slots. What I really wonder of course is if either of them will compete at all with the Sun/HP/Dec 68020/68030 machines out there. While I'll wait with any statement about these machines being released on Aug 25 (let's see if they're really released at the Duesseldorf Atari fair), here's my info on these Atari Unix boxes: Supposedly on the Atari fair in Dueseldorf the Atari TT will be released, which is a 68030-based box with 3 VME slots and runniong a TOS 1.4 variant. Optionally you can get a UNIX derivative for this machine, but don't ask me which kind of UNIX. Either also on the Atari fair OR later (if ever :-)), a machine called Atari TTX is supposed to come out. This machine will have 5 VME slots and be delivered with the above-mentioned UNIX-derivative as standard OS. It probably still can run the TOS 1.4. Anybody care to comment? For the record, we make: The DECstation-3100, a MIPS RISC processor UN*X workstation, and the VAXstation-II,2000,3100, et al, VAX processor based UN*X or VMS based workstations. All of them come with DECwindows as the user interface... ------------------------------------------------------------------------- Henry B. Does anyone know the form factor of the new '030 Atari's VME bus? Did they shoot themselves in the foot again by not using the full-size VME cards? Inquiring minds want to know... Dave Smythe dsmythe@cup.portal.com

August 25th is slated as the day Atari Corp. announces its new products, including the '030 machine. A major ad campaign which is being handled by the same ad firm which did the MacIntosh Olympic ads is also slated to start this Fall - the money has beenspent - the ads WILL appear. Accordin to Sam Tramiel in this month's START the '030 (aka TT) will come in many onfigurations, one being a 6 meg machine which will have TOS 1.4 built-in, will run UNIX 5.3.1 as a $299 add-on option and will aslo emulate MS-DOS (and the Mac no doubt with Dave Small's Spectre GCR.) Sam claims plenty of expandability (hurray!) with six or mor VME full size VME slots. It can be mated to a multi-sync as well as 'slightly adjusted' VGA color and mono monitors. The TT will offer a standard

Does anyone know something about the price of these new machines??
hmm@laura.UUCP (Hans-Martin Mosner) (08/25/89)
Info from the press show yesterday evening: TT comes with 2 meg of RAM, 30 meg disk, color monitor for about 6500 DM including VAT. I think the Dollar is currently at 1.97, so it should be about $ 3250 in the US, probably less as the machine has to compete with Macs which are a lot cheaper in the US than they are here... Info from the fair later that evening: The TTs had a crash arrival in Germany. Some braindead Lufthansa workers dropped them from 2 meters to the hard ground. Most chips decided not to stay in their sockets, at least one hard disk had a head crash... Anyway, Leonard and some other guys were able to fix at least some of the machines, and we could try some software on the box that evening. It did not run on the first try since we did something unclean with memory allocation that does not work on the TT, but we fixed it during the night and the software (Smalltalk-80) should run now at the fair (I'm not there because I've got a hurting back :-( ) Anyway, I think I could like the box (except for the design, which is at least extravagant)...
