[comp.sys.atari.st] More Drive Problems

JJL101@PSUVM.BITNET (Taz) (09/01/89)

Oh the drive woes.... now it seems that the drive doesn't recognized
when you put a different disk in it.... ie. when you open up a window
to look at the files on a disk, then leaving the window open, switching
disks then pressing escape, it just redraws the window with the files
from the previous disk on it... if I write to this new disk, it overwrites
the old directory on to the new disk, anyone have any ideas? Any help will be
appreciated!

  Thanks in advance.

If your drive is an Atari drive (or basically a plug-in drive you
bought), and you are having problems, then the interface board in that
drive is the problem.

However, if you are building a drive, then the problem is simple. You
can either:

1) Get TOS 1.4 - it re-opens the disk EVERY time it goes to read it!

2) Run a jumper between pins 2 and 28 on your drive mech. This
ties together the WRITE PROTECT and MEDIA CHANGE lines. Atari
drives need both signals in one pin. However, if you get write
protect warnings when the jumper is in place (like I did with my
Tandy drive), you are kinda in trouble. I placed a momentary
switch (normally open) between the pins, and when I put in a new
disk, I have to press it so the media change is received.

Hope this helps.
