For your viewing pleasure, the following list is a comparison of file sizes, before Double Click's Squish application and after. A kbyte here, a kbyte there and the savings add up. Notice that large files can really gain you some disk space. Double Click has really given us one heck of a utility here. I agree. I've run PACK on 40-50 programs, it seems to reduce the size from 30-40% pretty consistently. It's pretty neat to watch it strip over 90 kB off from ST-Talk Pro 2, approximately a 42% reduction. I've never had any problems with any of the TOS, TTP, or PRG files I've run through it. I only tried one ACC, which then caused con- tinuous rebooting, so I assumed it wasn't intended for accessories. (Since there was zero documentation, assuming was my only option.) Perhaps that was just a fluke. PACK does require a bit of time to unpack a program at run-time, which works out to a little slower from RAM disk, about the same from hard disk, and faster from floppy (faster to unpack than to read it in). SQUISH is reported to be faster in all cases. Here's a comparison of DC-Squish vs. Pack, using Larry Rymal's reported numbers for DC-Squish (% reduction in size): Program DC_Squish Pack 2.0 -------- --------- -------- JUGGLER2 14% 31% GFABASIC 14% 18% GFABASRO 15% 19% UIS-II 15% 21% ICONEDIT 16% 37% FLASH1.6 23% 32% In any case, I've been pretty pleased with PACK. There was a DOC-file with PACK, but i removed it since it were in dutch !! I could not understand a thing. The only thing a don't like is that it sometimes refuses to pack a program and gives a "Bad header" message Lars-Erik / ABK-BBS +47 2132659 / ____ ______ 0sterud / larserio@ifi.uio.no / /___ / ____________/ _______________________/ ____/ /

I've had problems with almost all programs compiled by MWC 3.0.6... Pack complained about something in the symbol table (or the like). Pack did not work with Tempus (Version 2.00), cause Tempus saves its parameters in the program file and cannot restore it from the squeezed file, of course. hase -- Hartmut Semken, Lupsteiner Weg 67, 1000 Berlin 37 hase@netmbx.UUCP Dennis had stepped up into the top seat whet its founder had died of a lethal overdose of brick wall, taken while under the influence of a Ferrari and a bottle of tequila.
