[comp.sys.atari.st] Atari loyalty

a390@mindlink.UUCP (Rick Carrillo) (08/24/89)

What I'd like to see is more Atari commercials and more magazine advertising.
I've only seen 1 St and 1 Amiga commercial but I keep seeing the Amiga
commercial repeatedly.

In response to the comments that Atari "is run by a bunch od
amateurs", I'll say this.

Now, if it weren't for the Tramiels, there wouldn't be an Atari.
You can't blame the Tramiels for the past ills of Atari, they were
inherited from the Warner days.

True, in the USA, the ST is not exactly the best thing since double
density. But concentrating the business and advertising in the
European market has made the ST *the* personal computer, with Apple
and IBM with a smaller market share. Now with the European market
and now the professional music market established, they can work on
the American market, but I think it is too late for the 68000 based
machines. (The 68020 ST Plus and the 68030 TT should be the
machines to push)

As far as support goes, with limited funds, it can't be the best,
**BUT** what other company will send you a *NEW* machine, if you
send them your broken system, and a check for a replacement. Apple?
(How hard should we laugh?) Commodore Amiga? even I B M?

This subject about support has been beaten to death in Sacramento,
with this simple question: What do you want? Now, every time I have
asked what kind of support you want from Atari has not been
answered. I hear the bitching and moaning, but no suggestions.

Now, if you have some legitimate gripes, why not *tell* Atari? They
can't read your minds, you know. Everyone will moan, but they won't
say anything to Atari, so how do you expect them to respond?

Me, I've bought almost all their computers, an 800, 800XL, 1040ST
and a Mega 4. I've liked their products, and will continue to buy
them. (Even got one of their calculators)

Now, what I'd like to see is some suggestions on what you want from
Atari. No more crying or whining.

I want the new TOS 1.4 in ROM. Now someone is going to say that I should
become a registered developer, but I have no intention to become a
software developer. I just want to use my atari for running TeX, 1st word,
a PD paint program, Uniterm, all the other net-software, SASL (a functional
programming language), and a game or two.
At this moment, I have to run all sorts of patches at boot time to get the
system working in a nice way: G+plus, Filefix (an improved file selector),
Idle12, Settime, Interprint (to get my P2200 working), QuikST, Folder100,
mousedoub, Shell.acc (a PD shell-accessory),...
This procedure causes some problems: I used to load more TSRs and ACCs,
like a ramdisk, but there would not be enough memory left for TeX (I have
a 1040). I now have a hard disk, but running TeX with a floppy and a
ramdisk should not be a problem, if only I wouldn't need all those patches
that eat up my ram.
Another problem is that some of these patches must be loaded in "the right
order" (your right order depends on what patches you want), and others
don't want to cooperate at all. I used to have TurboST, but it just wasn't
compatible with my new file-selector. This may be caused by the new file-
selector, but I don't want to miss it, so I'm not going to throw it out.

Many of these problems seem to have been solved in TOS 1.4, but I don't
feel like paying $600 for it (I have enough piles of xeroxed "doc's").
Atari claims that the new TOS is ready to be released, so why not just DO
it? I'd think that 90% of the work has been done, i.e. writing the new
TOS. All Atari needs is a ROM burner and an advertising campaign in the
many Atari-magazines (at least in Europe there are many). I have yet to
hear a GOOD reason for not releasing TOS 1.4 (not "we don't know how where
to buy ROMs").

That's funny, I haven't seen this Amiga commercial. . .
Maybe it's just bad timing.
