Has anyone had any experience with OmniRes? It's a commercial package which allows one to run low and medium res programs on a mono system. (I think it also allows you to run high res on a colour system.) Any gossip or reports of first-hand experience would be appreciated. How fast is it? How easy to use? etc. Thanks in advance, BBB Bob Bright <BRIGHT@DALAC.BITNET> Philosophy Dept. Dalhousie University Halifax, NS B3H 3J5

Is anyone on the net familiar with Omnires or any other mono to color/ color to mono emulators (I'm interested in color emulation with a mono system myself, since that's what I have)? I'd specifically like to know how well the program works - how focused or unfocused lines and text are, speed, realism, accuracy, etc. Omnires is advertised in this Summer's Start for $34.95, which sounds like a good price if it works well. Thanks for any responses; I think others would be interested in this as well. Jim Cochrane

It actually seems to work. It translates the colour screen into the mono format in software occasionally - so the mouse movement is jerky. You can alter the update rate if you don't mind spending a lot of cycles on a smooth mouse. There are several modes with different fill patterns for different colours and for the various combinations of resolutions. -- Doug Collinge School of Music, University of Victoria, PO Box 1700, Victoria, B.C., Canada, V8W 2Y2 collinge@uvunix.BITNET decvax!uw-beaver!uvicctr!collinge ubc-vision!uvicctr!collinge

A short while ago I asked this group about experiences with mono emulators wrt to dvist.prg. Having received no replys I bit the bullet and purchased Omni-Res (hypertek Development Corp). It does seem to work with dvist.prg and showdvi.prg (really great stuff). I have trouble using with gulam but its fine with Mark Williams shell (msh). I had to edit msh's profile (startup shell) to get the mouse visible under Omni-res. If you have a color monitor but sometimes need a monochrome (or vice versa as well - I guess) this program is passable. In emulating mono on a color screen it has 3 modes: crunch everything down (a little hard to read) show top or bottom half of screen (ok) scroll screen with mouse (nice!) I've only used this to emulate mono on a color screen- the booklet says it will also emulate color on a mono screen (by shades of grey I presume). I paid $32.50 US a bit high perhaps (all things relative) but it does work and appears to be more stable than the PD monoware.
