Make sure you are not coming from Version 5 on the IBM side. I have been able to use Wordperfect 4.0 across VAX, IBM and Atari, as long as they are version 4. There are some differences however, the VAX version 4 does not have italics, but it doenst complain about it. It converts it to underline. Jeff Beer

I've done some experiments with moving files between ST and IBM WORD PERFECT. Based on those experiments, and information in "Word Perfect Talks to the World (Transferring files between PC's, Mac's, etc.) [WORDPERFECT MAGAZINE, July 1989, p. 28], I've come up with the following tips: 1. If using 3.5" diskettes, use one formatted by a) an IBM, b) TOS 1.4, or c) one of the public domain MS-DOS formatting programs for the ST. 2. To transfer from ST 4.1 to IBM 4.2 or IBM 5.0, simply load the file into the program normally. When you save it (assuming you use default settings), it will be saved in the IBM format. Note that IBM 4.2 doesn't know about italics and will drop them. IBM 5.0 will correctly interpret ST 4.1 italics. 3. To transfer from IBM 4.2 to ST 4.1, use the "Save in 4.1 format" command. To transfer from IBM 5.0, use the "Save in 4.2 format", load the 4.2 file into IBM 4.2, and save it again using "Save in 4.1 format". Yes, this does mean that you need to have a copy of version IBM 4.2 in order to transfer from IBM 5.0 to ST 4.1 (or IBM 4.1 for that matter). 4. Font information will not normally transfer correctly from ST 4.1 to IBM 5.0. One way to alleviate the problem is to create your own conversion file. See "Document Conversion: 4.2 to 5.0 (A New Face on Some Old Files)" (WORDPERFECT MAGAZINE, July 1989, p. 21).
