[comp.sys.atari.st] Bugged ST with alternative graphics

Hello there,

I have a problem with my ST and I hope somebody out there can help. My
setup is a 1MB 520 STFM with a 20MB SH204 harddisk (the bulky noisy one) and
a mono monitor. The problem is that every once in a while when I write to
the harddisk (and only when I write), the screen tilts, ie it looses the
horisontal sync and becomes utterly unreadably. I tried to hook my harddisk
to a friends ST; it worked like a charm. I tried to hook a different monitor
(colour monitor) to my ST; same problem. So I figure the problem must be with
the ST.

The funny thing about this problem is that it is periodic in a funny
fashion, ie. one week it may be write to sector n that provokes the tilt,
but the next sector n is fine, and sector m is acting up. Weird indeed.

I spoke to Atari Denmark about the problem and they said "Oh yeah, we
know that one, call this company, they do all our repairs". I phoned the
company and got the chief engineer told me he had never heard of it and
neither had anyone else I spoke to.

I am not too happy about sending the machine for repair with a problem
like this, because I can imagine only too well getting it back after
having paid 100 dollars for repairs, adjustment, cleaning, polishing etc.
just to find the problem isn't fixed at all because it seemed to work OK
the 5 minutes the had it hooked up. Not to mention the inconvinience of
having to ship ST and harddisk (no local ST repair shop) and getting
a load of spares back a fortnight later.

Has anyone ever heard of a problem like this ? Any help is appreciated.
