[comp.sys.atari.st] Turboboost with GCR

jackin@utacs.UTA.FI (Markku M{enp{{) (10/18/89)

Has anybody succeeded in using Spectre GCR with faster
processors (16Mhz) ? I would like to get my MEGA faster and
especially would like to see Spectre GCR roaming in 16 Mhz.

The Spectre GCR works with all of the currently available 16
Mhz processor upgrades. Just don't expect it to run twice as fast,
most of the upgrades only offer about a 5% performance increase. The
upgrades are really limited by the low performance of the memory in the
ST (low compared to a 16 Mhz CPU). As far as I know only one of the
upgrades supplies a large performance boost since it has 32K of cache
memory, that allows the CPU to run at 16 Mhz with no wait states most
of the time. With the cache the performance increase can be as large
as 100%, the average boost is about 50%.

Yes, Spectre GCR will work nicely with a faster processor. Apparently, the
Turbo16 (FAST by Jim Allen) board will speed up Spectre by a very noticeable
amount. It will allow you to play sound at the same speed as the macs! My
info is from Mark Booth, sysop for the GEnie Gadgets by Small RT. I'm pretty
sure he said it is just a hair slower with Turbo16 than the equivalent
macintosh 16MHz board.

Don't know about the other 16MHz boards.

I used Spectre (NOT GCR) with the JRI 16Mhz board no problems. I imagine
the GCR will work as well -- I'll let you know if otherwise when my GCR
comes [and my friend doesn't mind me borrowing his ST again].

I saw a message from Dave Small on Compuserve the other day, saying that
Spectre runs about 45% faster with the FAST Technologies Turbo16 board.
12MHz, I guess I could live with it... }-)
