I saw a very attractive price, $60, for a Sony MFP-11 3.5" floppy drives in a Jameco ad. Has anyone tried hooking one of these to an ST? The specs look good. Marcelino Bernardo mbernar@erenj.bitnet

Mr Bernardo,
That is indeed a good price for a Sony Drive. Not being familar with
that particular model number (MFP-11) if it is double sided then it is a great
deal. The usual thing that has to be done to an add-on drive is removeing
terminators. Termination that works fine in the IBM/clone invironment causes
real havac in the ATARI st world. I find the RADIO SHACK externals when on sale
for $ 99.00 are pretty good. These are TEAC drives, after removing termination
and adding an external power supply form RADIO SHACK also about $10.00 They
work quite well. I use two internal TEAC's from RADIO SHACK in my modified
1040 st. as well as a built in 30meg hd.

I have had bad luck with a sony mechanism I bought from them (jameco). It will read but not write. Somebody else I believe had similar problems on the net. I sent the mechanism back to them and they said it checked out on their PCs fine. Anybody wants mine can have it for $55 including a 99% complete PC installation kit -- only thing missing from the kit is a 5 1/4" faceplate -- has cage, power and card edge adapters.
