I need to know what you ST users out there do when you're not using your ST. I have some friends who advocate leaving the computer and hardisk turned on, and others who say to turn them off. What do you guys do ? ===================================================================== | | | Keith Hedger : {...!}uunet!inmet!hedger hedger@inmet.inmet.com | | 'It is a sad, but beautiful world..........' | =====================================================================

| |I need to know what you ST users out there do when you're not using your |ST. I have some friends who advocate leaving the computer and hardisk turned |on, and others who say to turn them off. What do you guys do ? | |---------- The actual effect of turning the computer and monitor on and off is small enough to ignore. Electronics and crt's have come a long way since the days that it was uniformly recommended to leave equipment on all the time. In fact, unless you use a screen-saver, a modern crt will probably provide better service if you turn it off when not in use (to avoid phosphor burn-in). But the hard drive is a different story. Like a car, acceleration and braking (e.g. turning it on and off) are what really causes the wear. Cruising at highway speed causes little wear! So, you do not want to be turning you hard drive on and off ten times day. So, what I do is leave the computer on for the remainder of the day after I start using it. I use a screen saver, Neodesk has one, and so does MACCELLII.PRG which someone recently mentioned they were going to post. When I retire for the day, I shut it off (I hate the noise). I anticipate being able to buy a TT long before I have a problem! Disclaimer: The opinions expressed herein are those solely of the author, who has no pecuniary interest in the companies mentioned.
