I have a 1040st that has recently developed problems playing digitized
sound. It will play ordinary game sounds ok, but the streplay demo
sounds scratchy and low. Music Studio also has problems. I want to fix
this myself so what chip should I replace? I can get a sound chip, but
I wanted to check if I'm looking at the right culprit. Thanks...

I forget the part number but it is the General Instruments sound chip from Radio Shack. how do I know this......I had to replace mine and used this chip and it's been working like a champ for over a year! The chip is about $10 (standard 40 pin size) but they do have it.
