[comp.sys.atari.st] Nethack from c.b.a.st on Mega ST 4

dag@per2.UUCP (Daniel A. Glasser) (12/09/89)

A month ago I purchased an Atari Mega ST-4 to replace my VERY OLD
(June 1985) 520ST (expanded to 1 megabyte). I am very pleased with
the greater memory and better packaging, however I cannot get some
programs to run on the Mega.

I understand this in programs that access undocumented locations in
low RAM or in the ROMs, and for programs that run off the end of memory
in funny ways, but the this (the following problem) has me baffled --

    I can't run the nethack.ttp posted to comp.binaries.atari.st
    last summer.

More accurately, I can run it, but when it gets past the preliminary
(set-up) dialog, I get an address error (or is it a buss error, I can't
remember right now). I've running with all sorts of different setups
of auto and driver programs, but to no avail. If I unplug the hard drive
from my mega and plug it into the old 520, nethack.ttp runs fine.

Are there any known problems with Mega TOS w.r.t. the C runtime library
used in building this nethack executable which did not exist in the
older ROM TOS versions? Is this also a problem with TOS 1.4? I've
attempted to rebuild nethack from sources with GCC, but to no avail
(see a previous posting about this problem).

I know nethack runs on TOS 1.4... Here at tub there are some STs with
rainbow-tos and nethack runs just fine. It also runs at home (with a
weird c't-omti harddiskdrive ;-).
I'll try it on a Mega 4 if needed...
