I have been trying to install a 5 1/4" floppy drive on my 1040ST. I think I have done everything that I have seen mentioned in this newsgroup. I removed the termination resistor pack (and replaced it with 1 K-ohm resistors) and replaced the drive select pullup resistor with a 1 K-ohm. I also buffered the drive select and side select lines coming from the sound chip. The computer now recognizes the external drive at boot-up, and seems to be able to read existing files written on other machines, but does not reliably write or format a disk. I borrowed a friend's external 3 1/2" disk just to check that the computer signals are there, and it worked just fine with no problems writing or formatting. Any help in solving this problem would be greatly appreciated. You need to slow down the seek rate for the 5 1/4" drive in order for it to work properly. There are a few programs available for doing this, try looking in the panarthea archives. I beleive DCformat can do this as well as SCHIZO. --- Ray Wallace (INTERNET,UUCP) wallace@oldtmr.enet.dec.com (UUCP) ...!decwrl!oldtmr.enet!wallace (INTERNET) wallace%oldtmr.enet@decwrl.dec.com ---
