[comp.sys.atari.st] Loneliness in the Atari World?

01659@AECLCR.BITNET (Greg Csullog) (12/21/89)

One netter referred to the loneliness in the Atari community. Dear U.S.
netters, the U.S. is one country, not the world! There are lots of places
in the world where ST users are not lonely.

Just because the ST is not big in the U.S. does not mean you should assume
that life is miserable for ST users everywhere. Some of us do quite well,
thank you very much.

The thing I want to know about Atari, that NOBODY has been able to
explain to me so far, is why it seems to be ignoring the US? WHY dont
we have good advertising? Why dont we have good support? WHY can't
the few dealers we have out there seem to get the products in any
reasonable length of time? What is the problem? The ST is a great
machine, and I am happy I have one, but I am angry at the way the ST
users are treated. Any questions/comments?

I think the reason is just simple economics from Atari's point
of view. The ST has had a much better selling rate in the European
market; therefore, the demand for additional hardware and software is
higher. Logically, Atari is going to spend most of its advertising
and distrubution dollars where the demand is. This is unfortunate for
US ST owners, but the company needs to do what it can to survive.

A very good question. I get the impression that they are being sabotaged
by stupid internal politics.

This seems rather short-sighted to me (nothing personal, Jason). I
believe that advertising in the US would generate substantial demand,
which, in turn, would justify the expenditure. Unfortunately, I don't
think they can start with a small investment. I think they need to
make a BIG splash in order to get attention and get into the market in
any serious way. I sure wish they would.

Since the US needs to be seriously educated about Atari, especially because
they already have a negative image (so you aren't starting from zero, you have
to get yourself out of the whole FIRST before you can do any positive stuff),
it would take a mighty big splash, costing a mighty large amount of $$$, of
which Atari probably can not afford to spend.

You can't get the greater returns if you can't put up the capital.

How do you know that the "siz able ad blitz" [sic] was a flop? From all
indications, it's too early to tell how well or how poorly Comm_o_dore did.
