[comp.sys.atari.st] Hard Drive for sale: $550 for 2-25meg systems

WSCART01@ULKYVX.BITNET (01/16/90)

Hard drive for sale! 50 megs total storage for $550! Just plug in and go!

Note: Atari ST Computer and eletrical outlet required!

This is a hard drive system i put together myself. Takeing a bit here and
there to put together what i want to get rid of now since I only seem to
use 3 megs of drive 1, and use drive 2 for makeing 1 minute backups of
drive 1. How wasteful can you get?

-------------------Caution! Sales pitch starting!---------------

It is made up of the following:

2- Miniscribe 4020 drives: These are rated at 17 meg at MFM or 25 megs RLL
(I've formatted them at RLL, 480 tracks standard for this drive.)
Both drives have no bad sectors that i could detect. Both went thru
an ICD format program for a couple of hours with a check twice. This
was done again to make sure, then left alone and i havent had any
problems show up. (This is since OCT/Nov 89) They are both 5 1/4 inch.

1- ICD adapter: I originaly had a old ICD adapter, the kind that would not
let the computer boot unless drive was turned on. It was sent back an
an entirely new one was put in that doesn't have that problem. This
   was purchased around NOV 89.

1- Omti 4027a : I had one in Oct that blew up on me, since the replacement
i've had no problems. As I said previosly, this is an RLL controler.

1- Case : Just a plain old case, was used to hold a 4020 and a tape drive.
The tape drive was torn out, I drilled some holes and soved in another
4020. I then took some glue and covered up the slot for the tape drive
and sprayed the whole thing flat black. I then drilled a couple of holes
into the front left and right to be used for the LEDs to sit in. A
power on LED is stuck into an existing hole. (I just happened to glance
over and notice that the power LED is not on so I either forgot to plug
it in the last time i had it appart, or it burned out. I'll tose in an
extra for free an let you fix it.) One future modification might
want to be made, it is that the left 4020 drive seems to get hotter than
the right. Some air cool vents need to be drilled in the underside.

1- Power supply : The old power supply that use to be attached to the
back of the case burned out. I've upgraded to a 150 Watt (Overkill!)
baby IBM power supply. Basical, I just let it sit beside the case
with the 4 wire power lines going into the back of the pwere supply
into the back of the case.

Thats it.

If you have made it this far, you are either interested or just want to
see how your HD system compared to mine. If the later, "THZZZZZ" my is
better, if not here is my price and conditions.

I'm asking $550 any shipping and INSURANCE charges get tacked onto the
price which means it gets pushed over the $550 price. I will ship the
HD system only with insurance. I'm scared when it comes to Hard drives
and have seen some go out with the most miner bump while others could
drop a foot and not even scratch the surface.
I've got both drives partitioned the same (16 megs storage & boot, 8 megs
for my scratch files where i get down & dirty) I'll have to leave my
partitions 'C' and 'D' alone since i dont want to go to the work of changeing
my boot up, I will, however, load up my partitions 'E' and 'F' with PD
software since I only used my second drive as a backup anyway this wont
be a great loss and you can change it however you want it. (Gee, i've
at least 9 megs of spectrum pictures i can give you!)
Warrenty: There is none! I'm shipping a working system and if you do
something to break it, thats your own tough luck. That is why i'm
insisting on insured shipping in case it doesn't work, it wont be my
headache.
If all this seems like i dont want responablity if things dont work, your
right, i dont have mega bucks such that i can take a lose of $550 bucks
on non-working equipment.

PS: If you live close enought that you can drive here in a couple of hours
i'll spend whatever time nessisary to get you familar with my HD system and
even shoot the breeze with you for a while but just make it a weekend.

Of course you could buy a brand new 51 meg drive system from
Abco for 629. Even comes with a guarantee!
