[comp.sys.atari.st] FSF Anouncement

canada@crash.cts.com (Diane Barlow Close) (01/19/90)

Actually, I've been meaning to post the following request for a while but I
forgot... Richard Covert's posting jogged my memory.

I've been writing for the FSF for 2 years now (GAWK manual, GNU operating
system manual, BASH manual) and all that time was using an Atari ST to do
the writing (and the corresponding testing of the FSF software). Until a
couple of months ago, fellow FSF'rs would look at me incredulously when I
told them I was using an ST to do the work. They wanted to know when I was
going to buckle down and get a ``real'' machine. Well, that was before
they realized that I was using GNU Emacs ON AN ST!!

The Free Software Foundation has now discovered the power of an Atari ST
and they are amazed and pleased. They are especially pleased to discover
(to their *great* amazement) that most of the FSF software has been ported
to the ST. Everyone has been especially pleased with the quality of the
ports.

Richard Stallman asked me if I would make the following announcement:

If you have ported any Free Software Foundation to the Atari ST line of
machines, and you would like to see that software *officially distributed*
by the Free Software Foundation, then please write to
rms@wheaties.ai.mit.edu. Send a copy of your ported software and a letter
requesting inclusion into the standard distribution (or mention this
announcement).

What do you ``get'' from having your software officially distributed? The
``fame'' and the ``glory'', :-); as well, it becomes easier for you to
update your version because you will get updates ``first''.

If you are interested, then I encourage you to write rms. I am pleased to
see the ST finally recognized (and amused -- 2 years!!). The quality of
the ST ports is one of the (perhaps *the*) highest of all of the
independent ports of FSF software.

VOLUNTEER WANTED: As well, I am looking for volunteers interested in
porting the Bourne Again SHell (BASH) to the Atari ST. Brian Fox, author
of the BASH shell, is impressed with the amount of FSF stuff available for
the ST and has offered to assist anyone wanting to port BASH to the ST.
I'm currently writing the manual for BASH, and I must say that it is a
pretty good shell (combines the best of Bourne and Csh, with bits of Korn
thrown in). If you are interested in the ``job'', please send me (Diane
Close) e-mail.
