[comp.sys.atari.st] Spectre GCR--SoundMaster questions--Hard Drive questions

Z4648252@SFAUSTIN.BITNET (Z4648252) (02/04/90)

Hello Spectre GCRers,

I've some questions egarding SoundMaster and hard drive backup. First
SoundMaster:

Since the ST runs faster than a Mac Plus, sounds are slightly
off, a bit squeaky. The quest is to make the sounds play at the correct
speed. Using a program named SoundMover 1.51r, which works with SND files,
sound speed can be changed by small increments rather than the larger
block increments.
To get SoundMaster files to SND file formats, use a program named
SOUND->SND 1.2E It will pull the sounds out. Another conversion is also
necessary, the sounds have to changed to a ResEdit type format (yeah, I
know, but Rome wasn't built in a day...). This is easy with DiskTop.
Change the TYPE and CREATOR to lower cased 'rsrc'.
Now click on SoundMover 1.51r. Close the sounds that are showing up
in the left file list. Open up the file that you've been working with.
You can now work with it and change its speed.
After saving your work, use Sound Leech to convert the file to a
SoundMaster file.
It is here that something is missing in the process. SoundMaster
converts the sound back to its squeaky format, in spite of its changed
speed. I'm convinced that there is some pilot error here.
If anyone is willing to correct my steps and tell me what I'm doing
wrong, let me know. I'll summarize so other ST Spectre GCRers can
profit.

My final question is in regard to hard drive backups. Is there a
program similar to Turtle for the Mac that will work with Spectre GCR?
Although Dave's Mega-Minute hard drive image backup utility indeed works,
I get a little spooked when I encounter a read error during restore. It
would be nice to be able to back up individual files automatically. Don't
really need to be a speed freak for dependable backups. Hard drive backups
is the only thing missing on Dave's incredibly marvelous GCR. (can't wait
for 2.5!!!)
    Many thanks for everyone's help!!!

[stuff deleted 'bout sounds; the reason the sounds are played at a faster rate
on the ST is because the monitor's refresh rate is faster.. not sure if there
really is a way to get sounds to come out correctly]

Well... there is a commercial product called DiskFit that I hear is really
good. I don't have it, nor have I ever used it (there was supposed to be a
shareware version of it, but its origins were flaky so I deleted it Just In
Case). I've been scanning (sorta) the Mac anonymous ftp sites, and have found
a few pd/shareware backup programs, but none seem to fit the bill (they either
take 2 hours for 20 megabytes (YUCK!) or don't quite know how to get the total
files on disk.. maybe they don't like HFS, I dunno).

[The basenote asks questions about SoundMaster with Spectre GCR].

You'll be pleased to hear that version 2.5 (it may be 2.6 shortly)
is just passing final beta test. In it, 60 hz vblank is supported, so both
benchmark programs that use VBL, and more importantly, SOUND, which is
intrinsically tied to VBL, are dead on. No more high pitched sounds; no more
need to convert resources to get the pitch straight. Doug Wheeler did the
coding for this, and many other 2.5 fixes.

With any luck, 2.5 will be out in less than a month. Gotta finish
off the newsletter, get disks duped, start mailing. Free to 2.3K owners.

As for HD Backup, the only name I've heard is DiskFit. Many do not
work because we don't use Apple's SCSI dispatcher... which would be, err,
entertaining.

I haven't backed up my disk in a few months (from before I had a GCR),
so this may not apply, although I cannot think of a reason why. PC
Tools/MAC makes a reliable, fast disk backup. Good points are: I have
saved/restored a 15 Mbyte partition regularly without problems. Pad
points are: An obvious PC port (it isn't too bad but it ain't the
'real' thing), compressed files on floppies that the finder cannot
read. This means that the program is required to restore files (but it
does take less floppies than a non-compressed format.)

The above represent my abservations about my circumstances. You milage
may vary. The above does not represent an endorsement, just the story
of a semi-satisfied customer.
