[comp.sys.atari.st] Dave Small: PLEASE tell us about Appletalk

Please, please tell more about Appletalk for the ST.

dsmall@well.sf.ca.us (David Small) (02/13/90)

[The basenote asks me to tell more about the Appletalk board for the ST].

	Really, it's a bit preliminary. Right now, with a board that we have,
we can print to an Apple LaserWriter from Spectre (Mac) mode, and coexist
on a network with a Mac II. We've not yet tried fancier network things;
getting the Apple LaserWriter printing means good things are working.

	However, there are things to be done and added, PC boards to be made,
packaging, et all. I'd expect many moons of delay before it finally ships;
we want it to *work* without any hassles.

	This board should also allow *high* speed networking amongst ST's,
provided someone will write some driver software. It sure beats the 31K buad
of the SGS net... Appletalk is up at around 230Kbaud, I believe.

	So, it opens up all sorts of intersting possibilities.

	Again -- this is not going to be ready for quite some time. We've
asked for a few design changes to help make MIDI possible, since we're 90%
there anyway with this board, and that rev of the board is not done, though
close.

	Anyway, that's what's going on. I'd appreciate it if no one tried to
get in a "first order"; it will be *months* before we'll accept any.
