Unfortunately there is nothing close to the power of Notator for the Amiga. It really is a pitty because the Amiga could probably blow the Atari version from the water. Still, no one has really maxed the Amiga out in terms of midi software or notation software. Notator is a remarkable feet of software engineering on an average to above average piece of hardware. I do wish the Amiga software developers would not rely so heavily on the Amiga's hardware magic and instead (in addition to) push their software creativity to the limits, as was done with Notator. I would give anything to see C-Lab do Notator on the Amiga. Sigh, What a dream. (To those Amiga users who have never seen Notator by C-LAB, I HIGHLY recommend you run down to the nearest Music dealer who knows the Atari and Notator and watch it run. You will be Amazed. I wish some Amiga music-software developers would look at it and get inspired!) :-kevin :ramsiri@blake.acs.washington.edu Joel Swan I offer this posting for those who are wondering which machine is better for music. Obviously the Atari wins in this category. The existence of NOTATOR is the primary reason I wait for the TT. If NOTATOR shows up on another box... hmm? -kevin ramsiri@blake.acs.washington.edu

NOTATOR currently does NOT work with either the moniterm nor with Jim ALlen's accelerator. The Moniterm support will take about two weeks of software work (according to the US national rep).. TO work with the Turbo16 accelerator or with the TT, a change in the timing of the read of the dongle has to be implemented... another software change. Regarding the accelerator: I am told that there is a German board that does work with NOTATOR.. however, the cache has to be disabled.. and as a result, there are no real noticeable improvements in scrolling .. However, as the update to NOTATOR will include a full page preview among other things.. it would be nice to have MONITERM support. As it is now, one needs to do a lot of verticle scrolling when viewing and editing more than 6 tracks. This gets very time consuming. POINT: THe US rep Mikhail Graham tells me that C-LAB won't support the MONITERM unless they get a few hundred calls requesting it. SO far there has been few. So, if any of you NOTATOR users are simply waiting for MONITERM support.. it won't be there unless we call in our request. Here's the name and number of the C-LAB rep. A very nice guy i might add: Mikhail Graham 1-916-265-6484 He's always receptive to ideas and encourages users to make suggestions for improving the already awesome NOTATOR. -kevin ramsiri@blake.acs.washington.edu

ANOTHER victory for copy-protection. Long live copy-protection.

How many people could find ANY written material either in the prerelease notes or in the manual that says the new SOFTLINK runs on TOS 1.2 or higher? Neither Digidesign nor Mikhail, C-lab's rep, ever once suggested that my $30 plus phone calls etc would amount to zip for the update. Running SOFTLINK on TOS 1.0 yields: ABORT TOS Unknown! Must be older than 1.2! etc etc etc Maybe i will keep my ST in GCR mac mode 100% of the time instead of 90% from now on. -kevin ramsiri@blake.acs.washington.edu

To owners and potential buyers of NOTATOR for the ST: As a user of NOTATOR myself.. i would like to see some improvements in a few areas. I am sure others out there have their personal grievances and wish lists. I would like to collect your suggestions and create a compilation file that i will present to the reps at C-LAB. I AM NOT AFFILIATED WITH C_LAB! Just a user who knows that changes won't be made unless a good portion of the user base insists on them. Please email me your suggestions... after a time (not sure when), i will present the info to C-LAB with the hope that we can improve an already great package. Here are a few of mine: 1) Make it work with Jim ALlen's Turbo16 accelerator board 2) Support for MONITERM and large screen display. 3) Print spooling 4) Postscript support (for importing files into PS document processors) (as well as the obvious) 5) Ability to print when a RAM Disk is installed (perhaps certain ones already allow it.. i would like to know) 6) Greater Laser Printer support. 7) When entering a note with the mouse, we need a "register" that indicates the exact pitch as the mouse moves across the staff a la music studio. email me at ramsiri@blake.acs.washington.edu If for some reason you can't find my node, post it to the net, and i will grab it there.. but, do your best not to waste bandwith on this. Thanks! -kevin
