In my adventures I found several utilities for converting Atari DEGAS pictures into something standard. Here's a summary of what I found. CONV2IMG.PRG - Public Domain This program was written by Criag W. Daymon. The version I have is Version 0.98, released February 11, 1990. It can convert many formats (DEGAS, NEO, Spectrum, Art Director, Mac paint and Tiny) to a monochrome .IMG file. The images are stored without any compression (IMG "bit strings"). Available on GENIE, probably other places too. MVG - Shareware $20 This program, written by W. David Parks (aka Dr. Bob) calls itself "Dr. Bob's MultiViewer Graphica." I have the demo version 0.19L. It can load IMG, Mac, DEGAS, and Neo pictures. It is a pixel editor with manipulations such as rotate, crop, etc. It can save the picture in any of the formats. The full version is $20. The program says to send to: W. David Parks 180 N. Hazeltine Ave. Campbell, OH 44405-1024 I don't know yet if this is the correct address. PublicPainter - Free Demo. Commercial product in Germany (price?) Something called PPM from Germany. All the docs are in German. It looks nice but I don't trust the distribution I got (from Genie) which cliams to have come from an outfit in UK. I think this program tried to install a virus on my machine. It is a mono-only paint program. There is a commercial version available too, but I can't find more info on it. The program is an .IMG file based paint program. It may be able to read other formats too, but I won't use it because I think it's a hack or pirate version. PBMPLUS - Copyrighted but free to use. Lastly I ended up writing a few utilities for use with the PBMPLUS package that was distributed on the net (comp.sources.misc) a while back. This is a package for converting and manipulating bit-maps. It has its own "portable bit-map" format. It comes with a GEM .IMG file to "portable bitmap" converter. This was a little buggy. I ended up fixing it. I also wrote a utility to convert from DEGAS .PI3 to "portable bitmap" and back again. I also wrote a utility to go from portable bit-map to GEM .IMG format. These programs have been sent off to the PBMPLUS author, Jef Poskanzer. If anyone is interested in them before they get distributed, let me know and I'll mail them to you. -- David Beckemeyer (david@bdt.UUCP) | "I'll forgive you Dad...
