[comp.sys.atari.st] Arc.ttp & Unix

schultzd@frith.egr.msu.edu (03/11/90)

Ok folks, here's the question...

I just bought a used 520ST (I love it!) and get most of my software
from the net! (Usually terminator!) Downloading a 400K file just
to de-arc it so I can read the docs is a pain...

My solution put the arc.ttp program in my Unix machine. If someone
has already translated Atari "arc" to Unix usable, PLEASE let me
know! If not, I would like source code for arc so that my partner &
I can make whatever modifications to allow it to run on Unix...

THis would save me (& probably lots of others) the hours of downloading
files that we can't use. (The best example I have is I downloaded
a 200K program that only works on Mono monitors. Of course, I have
a color AND I had to download before I could read about this!

If this type of program would be useful to anyone OR already exists,
let me know.

Well, if you can ftp you can find source for Unix-arc here at Vaasa,
Finland. It is in pc/source and file is called arc.tar.Z

Certainly is.

Well, I recently pulled arc off the sources archive here at Imperial
College to compile it on a Sun4. The distribution seems to be geared
towards both ST and Unix. (Certainly the Makefile mentions both of
them.)

It compiled first time on the Sun4 and is currently working fine.

The version is by Howard Chu (hyc@umix.cc.umich.edu)
You can get it from any comp.sources.unix archive (eg. uunet) in
volume15.

Hope this helps.

Frank.

Geeze, what a world. Not only have I already done Just What You Asked For,
but I personally installed ARC on the msu machines over a year ago.
Look around, it should be in the local/bin directories. Of course, you
probably should get the latest version, from terminator.cc.umich.edu.
(35.1.33.8). It's in ~ftp/unix.
