Some days ago my SH204 hard disk decided not to work with my MEGA ST1 anymore. It does not autoboot, neither can it be read or written with AHDI installed. It strikes me how the boot phase sounds different: in particular, some beeps (the last ones) seem to be missing. I removed the Tandon TM262 drive and plugged it in a PC compatible: Disk Manager, a low level disk utility recognized the drive (610 tracks, 4 heads, 17 sectors) but could not verify any track, just saying something like "SEEK I/O COMMAND FAILED". Do the more technically inclined among you think that I'd better go out and buy a new drive or is there a chance of repairing the old one ? Could I continue to use my SH204 with its defective Host-adapter by placing inside a Seagate ST157N or ST296N ? Is there any power supply problem ? Or would it be better to keep my Adaptec 4000 controller upgrading to a ST251-1 MFM drive ? Has anyone installed an internal SCSI drive inside the MEGA case ? If you let me I have some more questions. Which is the best way to upgrade a MEGA ST1 to 2.5 or 4 Mb ? I guess some unpopulated solderless board with 1Mbit DRAMs bought from some USA mail-order service. Are boards suitable for old STs suitable for MEGA ST1s too ? German contributions are welcome. I am also considering Spectre GCR; I have seen it advertised as low as $200 with Mac 128k ROMs at $124. I would like to know whether there are retailers in North Florida, since a friend of mine is currently in Gainesville, Fl. I thank you all. ******************************** Francesco Zanichelli Department of Computer Science University of Bologna, Italy E-mail FALDELLA@BODEIS.CINECA.IT ********************************
