Hello, This may have been discussed before. I haven't read the net since a long time. Last week dutch TOS 1.4 ROMS were installed in one of our mega-2 systems. I found some nasty problems, which I don't like at all: 1) I get lost and cross-linked clusters on the harddisk. The harddisk is a megafile 30. I use CBHD 3.5, the harddisk driver from the german 'Scheibenkleister' book. This did run very well with TOS 1.2 (and 1.0). In the auto folder only environ.prg (which sets the environment strings for TeX) and TOS14FIX.PRG are used. (I do not use poolfix3, because it can not load after CBHD). TURBOST16.ACC is the only accessory used. I use GULAM, which is installed to autostart. I couldn't relate the problem to a specific program. Although I noticed that most problem files were created by SEDT or TeX (the TOOLS version), but than most files are created by those 2 programs anyhow. The problem might be a virus problem. I did get an old megafile 20 harddisk on the same day. The disk was not empty. There were very much harddisk problems on that disk, and I did send it back. I'm not sure however, whether the a virus may have been transported from one system to the other. 2) Sometimes the system does not boot correctly, or I can not start anything from Gulam. Well, I have a lot of related questions. But I will post them separately. The first problem described above is by far the most important. I hope somebody has an answer. Hello, I phoned the shop where I bougt the mega-2 with the dutch TOS 1.4 ROMs, I wrote about before. They told me atari the ROMs were new. They had only recently received UK and dutch TOS 1.4 ROMs. These have not been delivered before. Only sets of six 34 K ROMs are available, so they had to do some soldering to get these in a mega. They told me, they had problems with the UK ROMs themselves. In fact they lost their whole Calamus directory on a megafile 60. They installed the ROMs in a mega-4 which had worked correctly until then. They had not used the CBHD driver or Gulam. So I think these programs can not be related to the problem. I received a megafile 20 from them which had been used with this mega 4 as a temporary solution (atari does not deliver much in Holland at the moment), the FAT and Directory structure of that disk had been ruined completely. In fact I tried to repait this structure using the dutch TOS 1.4 ROMs, and did not succeed. At that moment I expected the disk to be bad, and send it back. These problems caused me to resubscribe to the info-atari16 digests on BITNET. But I'm not sure whether I will receive them. Anyhow, I have not received many reactions to this problem yet. Please send important information to me directly. It might be important to state that the problems are occur very often. They are not occasional harddisk errors. I do not think that anybody who does serious work on the ST can have missed them. So, if the problem is caused by TOS 1.4 it must be an new problem. I do not think that the previous US and German ROMs contain it. I did look into the contents of the dutch ROMs. There is some rubish there like JIM LOVES JENEANE. Is this true for the US ROMs as well? Or did someone fool with it. ATARI are you listening? I do not want to start a world wide rumour, I just want to get rid of the problems. Please send me any info that might help. I could even send a dump of the dutch ROMs to you, if that might help. Chris Evelo MFAGKCHR@HMARL5 (BITNET)
