DBMS for Unix: Someone asked about DBMSs for Unix. I spent a number of years evaluating these databases and came to following summary conclusion: IT DEPENDS ON YOUR APPLICATIONS There is no one single DBMS that is good for everybody. Some people love Oracle, because of it's IBMish nature. Some people prefer Ingres because of its technical ellegance. Some people prefer Unify for its performance. Some people like Informix because of its simplicity. As I say, you can find someone to argue any of these causes, and it really is going to depend on your personal needs. For instance: If you are planning to handle VERY LARGE databases and you have to access them very quickly, then you would probably eliminate Informix from the discussion. If you have to run the DBMS on very small computers, that are very crowded, and you don't want to handle very large DBMSs, than Informix might be very good. If you want to optimize for speed for a single application, than maybe Unify would be your best bet. But if you have to handle a large number of ad-hoc applications THAT ARE CONTINUALLY changing you might prefer the pure relational model (Ingres or Oracle). I could go on, but you get the idea.
