One thing to beware - if you choose the 'MS-DOS Bootsector' option in DC
Format, be careful when using disks formatted in this way on the ST.
The ST will think all the disks have the same serial number, which could
lead to FAT corruption. (This applies to all disks formatted on PCs &
clones too - where the ST wants to see a serial number, IBMs etc. put
the DOS version number.)

DC Format WITHOUT the MS-DOS bootsector option will format the disk in a
way which many PCs can read, as will NeoDesk, TOS 1.4 and no doubt many
other formatters. If you really need all the MS-DOS bootsector junk,
Moshe Braner's IBMFMT will put it on the disk for you AND will write a
random serial number in the correct place (make sure you have version
1.1 or higher - version 1.0 left the DOS version number in.)

Sounds like IBMFMT is the one I need.
A big "THANK YOU" to all of you who sent mail and posted notes
no this question. I'm glad I asked, because I had been formatting
my disks on a PC, which works, but as a couple of people have noted,
this may cause me trouble when I don't pay attention. By using IBMFMT,
I will be able to avoid this horror.

I've used DCFORMAT and the disks produced are readable by the MSDOS 3.3
PC's around here but none of them will write to the disks. I just copy the
boot sector (of a disk that has been formatted on a PC with MSDOS 3.3)
onto the newly ST desktop formatted disk (altering the serial number
of course). THis is the only way I've found that produces MSDOS 3.3
writable disks.
