[comp.sys.atari.st] HP Deskjet - Refillable cartridges, Special Labels

rcd@cbnewsj.att.com (rana.c.dutt) (06/01/90)

I came across the following two items in comp.sys.mac, which I thought
would be of interest to HP Deskjet users in this newsgroup.

			------------------------

ITEM 1 - Refillable, waterfast(?) cartridges!

	Steve Cook (cook@hpmtlx.HP.COM) writes

A company in Waltham, Graphic Utilities, has started selling a
refillable Deskjet cartridge for about $15.00. They claim their
	ink has 90% retention whereas HP's only has 5%. I haven't tried
it yet, but it sounds promising. They can be reached at
1-800-669-4723. I know HP is working on an ink which is less
	water soluble.

ITEM 2 - Special Labels

	Stephen Marcus (marcus@cbnewsc.att.com) writes

I called HP to ask them why you can't use laser printer labels
in a DeskJet/Writer. Sure enough, standard labels tend to come
off their backing in the paperfeed mechanism. However:

HP now makes special labels for the DeskJet/Writer -
92296 labels, call HP at 1-800 538 8787 for order info.
These labels have a special glue which makes the backing
adhere better, and not come off in the paper path.

Also (this information given by HP support), Avery makes labels
for the DeskJet/DeskWriter: they MUST have a gold starburst on
the box saying "FOR DESKJET". I checked with the local EggHead,
and they already had mailing labels, but not yet the ones for
floppy disk labels. You can also order direct from Avery:
	(818) 969 3311 x3369.

			------------------------

Perhaps someone will try these products and share their experiences
with us. (Note, I have no affiliation with either company.)

I've been printing with their ink for a while and the print quality is almost
as good as the genuine HP stuff (it 'spiders' just a little more.) It
still smears when wet, though--I don't know if it's *more* waterfast than
the HP ink, but it's not *completely* waterfast...

The ink that they sell is a squeeze bottle with a syringe tip--you stick
it into an empty HP cartridge, squeeze (for a few minutes--syringes are
always slow), and you've refilled the cartridge. Each bottle has more than
enough ink, so you can usually top off a second cartridge.

Note that certain mail-order places sell real HP cartridges for about $15.
(Plus shipping, etc.) The walk-in cash single-unit price for the GU refills
in Cambridge, Mass has been about $13.
