[comp.sys.atari.st] hard disk blues

depeche@quiche.cs.mcgill.ca (Sam Alan EZUST) (06/10/90)

Some interesting things have happened to me lately. I am using a 1040
with Supra 30mb hard disk, and tos 1.4.

I just started converting GIF pictures into SPU format with BGIF,
and around the same time I tried using PINHED17.prg.

When I tried converting a particular GIF file which must have been
corrupted, I got a "code too large in file" and the system crashed.
When I rebooted, I noticed some weird things about the partition on
my HD which I was using at the time (d:). For one thing, in a
temporary directory of WORDPERFECT (which I was not using in the last
session) some huge garbage files were created. I couldn't delete them,
so I backed up my partition, and tried to 'zero' it with supra utilities
3.41. Then I start copying the files from floppy back to hard disk,
and once it reaches the WP directory, the original WP directory magically
comes back and all of the files below it!!!

I zero it again, try a restore, and it still comes back. This makes
me think that supra's utility doesn't actually zero the contents of the
directory, but just does a quick'n'dirty root-directory erase.

Does anyone know of a program which actually DOES physically erase
a partition?

Anyway, I reserved myself to doing backup of the entire HD, low-level
format, and restore, but fortunately, I thought of trying my PC emulator
and running CHKDSK, which happened to be a very good idea. It first told
me that it was a non-dos partition, and asked if I wanted to continue
anyway, so I did. Then the program created
all these FILExxxx.CHK files which I could then delete, zero the partition,
and then restore the files as normal.

And I lived happily ever after.

There should be utilities like this in the PD world for the ST. anyone
know of any?

One more thing: I tried converting more pictures and the same thing
happened again. I quickly knew what to do this time, but I also deleted
PINHED17 from my auto folder and have used BGIF a lot since then,
and it has been working fine ever since. This makes me think that
pinhed17 is a little screwed up.
