[comp.sys.atari.st] Problem with Lattice C v5.04.00 Install - FOLDER??? BUG

gossa@rdge44.enet.dec.com (Andrew Goss) (06/06/90)

I have a strange problem installing the new Lattice C compiler on my
65meg TCT hard drive. ( I have a 520STFM expanded to 1meg).

1) If I do a minimal installation (about 1.5megs) Then everything is O.K

2) If I go for a full istallation (5meg spread over 7 DS floppies) Then I get
strange errors like the program LC.PRG is unable to create intermediate files
and GO.PRG,LC2.PRG and CLINK.PRG crash with various amounts of bombs.
Recopying the files from the floppies seems to cure the problems, but it then
has errors linking (I think the floating point library is corrupt).

Could the problems be due to the 40 FOLDER BUG??. I'm running ICD BOOT
v4.6.0 which says it includes a fix for this and I set the number of extra
  folders to 200.
if I run DLII it reports no cross linked or lost sectors but does complain
about the directory structure being bad. DCDEMO.PRG complains about garbage
characters at the end of the directory tables.

Does anybody have any experience with Lattice C v5 or ICD's software v4.6.0
and could some kind person mail me a good description of the 40 folder bug.

	Thanx in advance

I have Lattice C v5 and have experienced no problems installing it on my
20meg Supra.

I have the 40 Folder fix set to 100. No problems encountered yet.

As I understand the problem, TOS 1.X has an internal pool of memory
which it uses. The initial memory reserved for this purpose was not
sufficient to hold all the necessary data under certain conditions.
One of the conditions arose when 40 active folders were encountered.
From discussions in this news group, I have learn't that there are
other contributing factors to the reduction of the initial memory
pool, for example when a application uses malloc frequently.

All I can suggest is that you try using the Folder patch instead of
ICD's in case it is not behaving properly. Also check that you have
correctly set up the environmental variables. Failing that try
contacting your supplier of Lattice for advice. I could not tell were
your posting came from, but HiSoft in England are the distributors
here, and they do read this news group occasionally, any advice HiSoft.

Good luck

Chris....

I'm not aware of any problems such as this in the installation program. There do
seem to be soom screwy things in it however when running on pre-1.4 machines to
do with disk changes going AWOL. That is probably what has happened, I'm getting
the chap who wrote install.prg and batcher.prg to look into it.

ICD 4.6.0 should be fine, I use it myself, so I would probably have spotted
problems by now!

Alex Kiernan, HiSoft.

P.S. sorry I butchered your original post so badly, my news poster point
blank refused it, until I hacked it around liberally.
